Welcome!!
A little about the design
The inspiration for this is I've been thinking about the quilters who taught me. With regard to the tradition of quilting in which I operate, which stems from the Llynfi and Garw valleys in South Wales, I often say I stand on the shoulders of the strong and brave women who went before me, all of whom seem to have been remarkable characters. Most of them were quite devout, and I think would have been delighted to learn I think they fulfil the spec from Proverbs 3:15 - "She is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire compares with her". Because most of them were of quite modest means, I also thought of William Blake's words:
"The countless gold of a merry heart,
The rubies and pearls of a loving eye,
The indolent never can bring to the mart,
Nor the secret hoard up in his treasury"
Thinking about the Llynfi and Garw too - both valleys were busy centres of the mining industry in previous centuries. The industries have long gone now and the valleys cleaned up: today Nature has had her way and they are truly beautiful! However, my thoughts were of these gems of women tucked away midst the coal and steel... and thus this design came about. It is really my tribute to them, my 'pearls and rubies'.
It is an eight month project, starting in September 2023

Technical Stuff
The image shown is the original version with a stone coloured background. It would also work in a lighter context, as shown in the picture below. Get in touch if you would like details on how to achieve this - it's very simple! The quilt is around 91" x 115" although there is considerable scope to make it larger or smaller when it comes to adjusting borders. It will be an eight month project. |
