Lying a few miles to the south of the capital of Wales (Cardiff) in the middle of the Bristol Channel, is a very special little island known as Flat Holm in English or Ynys Echni in Welsh. It is pictured, at sunset, in the header on this page.
Echni is a very historic place - Marconi made his first broadcast from there - and it is also significant as regards natural history. More about it can be found on the Flat Holm website at this address http://www.flatholmisland.com/
My involvement is really that I need to escape from the 'real world' sometimes, to get down and dirty with my sewing machine, and generally destress. There is a cute little cottage on the island, which has been beautifully renovated, and is the perfect place for me to recharge my creative batteries. The special atmosphere, the quality of light and the sheer peace of the place are well worth the hassle of getting there - the island can only be accessed for normal purposes by boat, and as there are no shops, I have to take everything, including food for the entirety of my stay, with me when I go.
In 2017 I will be donating a rendition of my Bay House block of the month (pictured to the left), which was itself inspired by my time on Echni, to the island for them to raffle to raise much-needed funds to keep their activities going. I am also going to make quilts to adorn Foghorn Cottage, but this might take a little longer! If you would like to know more about the raffle, please contact me and I'll give you further details. Or go to visit Echni yourself on a day trip and soak up the atmosphere for yourself!
